What is a DO?
There are two types of medical doctors in the United States, MD's and DO's. A DO is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Both MD's and DO's attend 4-year medical schools and complete residency programs as part of their training. To date, there are 23 Osteopathic medical schools in the US. Osteopathic physicians are found in every specialty of medicine.
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine take a holistic approach to medicine. They believe that a patient should be treated as a whole person. Also, DO's believe that every part of the human body is interconnected. So, if there is a problem with one part of the body, other parts can be affected as well.
Osteopathic physicians are also trained in Osteopathic Manipulation (OMT), which are techniques used to treat various problems in the musculoskeletal system.
